The Process

How a Brakes & Tires Job Goes

Single-axle brake job runs 90 minutes to 2.5 hours. Four tires mounted and balanced takes about 60 to 90 minutes.

1

Wheels off and brake inspection

20 to 30 min

Measure pad thickness, rotor thickness with a micrometer, and check caliper slides, hoses, and parking brake.

2

Tire inspection and rotation

15 to 25 min

Check tread depth corner by corner, look for cupping or feathering, and rotate per the recommended pattern.

3

Pad and rotor replacement (per axle)

60 to 90 min

Replace pads and rotors, clean and lube slide pins, and seat the new pads properly before letting the truck down.

4

Balance and mount (if doing tires)

15 to 20 min per wheel

Mount on the Hunter-style machine, road force balance, and torque lugs to spec in a star pattern.

5

Test drive and brake bed-in

15 to 20 min

Drive it, do a proper bed-in procedure on new pads, and check for pulling, noise, or pedal feel issues.

Good to Know

Brakes & Tires Questions

Yes. Total Turf & Auto on NW Topeka Blvd is a working tire shop and brake shop. We mount, balance, and rotate tires, and handle brake pads, rotors, and calipers. Call (785) 925-4040 to schedule.

No. If they measure above the discard thickness stamped on the rotor and are not warped or grooved, they can be resurfaced or reused. Ryan will measure them in front of you if you want to see.

Most drivers get 30,000 to 70,000 miles out of a set of pads. City driving in Topeka and a lot of stop-and-go on Wanamaker shortens that. Highway commuters get more life out of them.

We do alignment checks and will tell you if your vehicle needs one. For the actual alignment we partner with a nearby shop that has a dedicated rack, since doing it right requires equipment we do not duplicate.

Yes. Have them shipped to the shop or bring them in. We charge a standard mount and balance fee per wheel.
